Paperbark Books

What was actually in the Maldon boxes

A book on the desk, still from the boxes

The first box was cookery and almost nothing else. A river of jam, two copies of the same book, and a notebook of recipes in a hand I can’t read past the word “quinces”. I’m not selling the notebook. It isn’t mine to sell. It sits under the desk until someone from the house asks for it.

The second box was travel, the kind with the maps still in a pocket at the back. One guide has a bus ticket used as a bookmark, Melbourne to Castlemaine, years old. I left the ticket in.

The third was thinner. Poetry, a school anthology with a name on the flyleaf, and a novel stopped halfway. That’s the one under the lamp. If it isn’t there when you come in, someone finished it.
